Updated on : 16-05-2017 08:55 AM
Many banks did not operate ATMs running on old software in view of the threat from ransomware 'WannaCry'.

This is a malware that encrypts all data on your computer. Microsoft no longer supports Windows versions which are older than Windows 7, but patches are available for higher versions.

The RBI had asked banks to follow the instructions of the government's Computer Emergency Response Team, which has come out with a list of dos and dont's on how to protect networks from the global ransomware attack. '

Government said there is not much impact on India.

RBI has also asked banks to put in place software updates at ATMs to protect their systems from attack. Cyber crime experts are seeking strong legislation to punish the perpetrators of such attacks.

On another note, Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed United states of America for the global cyber attack as thousands more computers in China and Japan were hit by ransomware after it crippled UK's national health services on Friday.
