Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux unveiled in Paris, the official selection of 18 films for its 70th edition that opens on May 17, including works by Sofia Coppola, Michael Haneke and Francois Ozon.

Artistic director Fremaux and president Pierre Lescure announced 49 films from 29 countries, including films from 12 women directors and nine first-time feature helmers.

Russia makes a strong showing this year, while prolific film hubs China and India are entirely unrepresented. There is not a single Hollywood studio film in the selection.

The festival will open on May 17 with French director Arnaud Desplechin's latest film, "Ismael's Ghosts", a drama starring Mattieu Amalric, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Sofia Coppola's film "The Beguiled" made it to the official selection, starring Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Kirsten Dunst, and Colin Farrell. This year's selection also features lastest films by world-renowned directors such as Noah Baumbach's "The Meyerowitz Stories", Todd Hayne's "Wonderstruck", Yorgos Lanthimos's "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" and Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Loveless".

Celebrities who should be seen walking the red carpet include Adam Sandler, Joaquin Phoenix, Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, and Kristen Stewart.

Among the surprises was the inclusion of a virtual reality project from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu entitled "Carne y arena", as well as two television projects, David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" revival and season two of Jane Campion's "Top of the Lake."
