Ahmedabad declared world heritage city by UNESCO

Ahmedabad declared world heritage city by UNESCOUpdated on : 09-07-2017 08:25 AM
Ahmedabad has made India proud again. The walled city has become India's first World Heritage City. Unesco's world heritage committee selected Ahmedabad in its 41st session in Karkow in Poland on Saturday. More than 20 countries supported it.

Ahmedabad is a city where communities live together in perfect harmony. The walled city is a shining example of coexistence of Hindu, Islamic and Jain traditions. The city witnesses a Grand Jagannath Yatra and Eid together with shared joy.

Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram and role of city in India's non-violent freedom struggle makes this city special. Facts like Sardar Patel was a mayor of the city and had practiced as lawyer in historic Bhadra court also helped it bag the big race.

The soul of the walled city is Pols. In these small lanes and bye lanes, shared culture can be seen omnipresent. 26 ASI protected structures here capture the essence of community living.

World heritage City status now puts Ahmedabad in the league of Paris, Cairo and Edinburgh. After Bhaktapur in Nepal and Galle in Sri Lanka, Ahmedabad is the only city from Indian subcontinent to have found place in 287 world heritage cities. The tag will surely boost tourism.

It’s a long journey that began in 1984 with first effort to study the heritage preservation by Ford Foundation. But the real boost came when Modi government gave it a big push. 606-year-old walled city was preferred over Delhi and Mumbai in January 2016. Ahmedabad proved that it deserved because city has done wonderful work in last 20 years to conserve its living heritage.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and BJP president Amit Shah hailed the declaration.

Ahmedabad was in the race for the prestigious title along with Delhi and Mumbai.
