India on second spot in ICC Rankings

India regained the second spot in the ICC one-day rankings following their tri-series triumph in Sri Lanka and are in with a chance to clinch the top spot if they manage a good show in the Champions Trophy.

With the Compaq Cup win in Sri Lanka yesterday, India came forward to conquer the second spot in the ICC one -day rankings and also maintains a chance to be on the top again if serves a better show in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

Following the 46 run triumph in tri-series, the second spot came as a big respite to the Indian cricket team who experienced a sojourn on the top spot a little while ago; that came after beating Kiwi’s in the series earlier. However, the team slipped to the third position within 24 hours of that win after being beaten by the home side on 12th September.

The same day Australia beat England by seven wickets at Lord's to sneak ahead into second position.

But Monday's victory put India back to within a single ratings point of South Africa and with just two points separating first from third in the table, everything is set up for a rankings showdown at the ICC Champions Trophy, which gets underway in South Africa on 22nd September.

Before the Champions Trophy, Australia also holds a chance to go top of the rankings if manage a clean sweep against England. (HS-15/09)
