Taliban using Pak bases to carry attacks in Afghan: NYT

The Taliban leaders, backed by the powerful ISI, are using their bases in Pakistan to carry out a wave of attacks in the once relatively placid parts of Afghanistan, said the report on Thursday.

A New York Times has on Thursday confirmed in its report a fact that is not hidden certainly that Pakistan is using its bases to launch deadly offensive against its neighbour Afghanistan.

"Taliban's leadership council, led by Mullah Muhammad Qatar and operating around the southern Pakistani city of Quetta, was directly responsible for a wave of violence in once relatively placid parts of northern and western Afghanistan," the New York Times quoting senior US military and intelligence officials as saying.

The report reveals the comments made by the
US officials who are said to believe that the Taliban leadership in Pakistan still gets support from parts of the country's Inter-Services Intelligence.

The revelation on Taliban's expansion plan in Afghanistan where it once had a wide presence comes at a time when the US is struggling to settle on a new military strategy for the region. (HS-24/09)
